Nigerian troops uncover heaps of arms abandoned by fleeing Boko Haram terrorists in Baga

Nigerian troops engaged in cordon and search in Baga continue to discover more arms of various background and shapes abandoned in some houses and surrounding communities by fleeing terrorists, the Nigerian defence headquarters has said. The spokesperson for the Defence Headquarters, Chris Olukolade, a Major General, said heaps of weapons, most of which were strange looking or destroyed, were still being gathered.

The United Nations has urged the Nigerian government to ensure the sanctity of new dates for its general elections, amid increasing concerns the government may yet again move the crucial polls from March 28 and April 11. The general elections were shifted from February 14 and 28 by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, over security fears.

President Goodluck Jonathan has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of ridiculing Nigeria before the international community and of scaring investors away from the country by his consistent criticism of his administration. In an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, Mr. Jonathan said Mr. Obasanjo, by his utterances, was creating the impression that Nigeria is a country on the verge of collapse.
