Jonathan promises to reward soldiers fighting Boko Haram

President Goodluck Jonathan Thursday in Mubi, Adamawa State and Baga, Borno State applauded Nigerian troops for proving their mettle once again through the rapid recapture of territories formerly held by insurgents in the country’s North-Eastern states. He assured the soldiers that they wouldl be duly rewarded for their bravery and patriotic service to the nation at the successful conclusion of ongoing operations against Boko Haram.

Jonathan visits Mubi, heads to Baga

President Goodluck Jonathan has visited Mubi in Adamawa State, more than three months after Nigerian troops recaptured the town from the insurgent group, Boko Haram. The president arrived Yola international airport at about 10.45a.m. Thursday, accompanied by the Chief of Defence staff and all the service chiefs and the inspector general of police. He later travelled by helicopter to Mubi. At Mubi, Mr. Jonathan met with the Emir of Mubi, Isa Ahamadu, and the people of the area.

chief visits Baga, says elections may hold in recovered territory

Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Kenneth Minima, said on Wednesday that elections could be held in territories recovered from the Boko Haram insurgents. Mr. Minima, a Lieutenant General, said successes recorded by the troops in dislodging the insurgents from some territories may enable the displaced persons to return back to their homes before the general elections which are scheduled to hold on March 28 and April 11.

Nigeria Senate slashes subsidy on kerosene, petrol

The Senate on Wednesday, slashed the allocation for petrol and kerosene subsidies presented by the Ministry of Finance in the Medium Term Expenditure Framework for 2015 – 2017. The upper chamber, while approving the MTEF, slashed petrol subsidy from N200 billion to N100 billion.

Nigeria approves 9 new private universities

The Federal Executive Council at its usual Wednesday meetings approved the issuance of operating licenses to nine new private universities in Nigeria. The meeting was chaired by Vice-President Namadi Sambo. Once the operating licenses are issued, there will be 60 private universities in Nigeria.
