FG releases N200b to varsities

Image
Federal  Government on Monday disbursed N200 billion to Vice Chancellors of public universities in the spirit of recent agreement between government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to begin the implementation of NEEDS identified within the sector. ASUU had last week alleged that the Federal Government was dragging its feet on the pledge to commit the funds into the university system, citing undue delays in the release of the first quarter tranche of disbursement to the universities. The NEEDs assessment and implementation report in which areas of intervention were identified in the public universities accounted for the protracted strike by ASUU in 2013. Federal Government had in a bid to resolve the impasse with the union promised to inject N200 billion annually to the sector within a four-year timeframe, beginning from 2014. Wike tasked the universities on judicious use of the funds to improve infrastructure in the schools, adding that an accountabilit...

The former head of state’s reaction to the killings was contained in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Sunday night and as at press time, had attracted 862 likes and 967 comments. The three-time presidential candidate and national leader of APC in the statement said:  “We condemn the recent escalation of senseless violence in Borno State. "I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR AMAECHI'S 2007 WOES"- OBASANJO'S

Image
Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has said he should be held responsible for all the travails of Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi before and after the 2007 election. The PDP Chieftain while commissioning some of the projects executed by the Amaechi administration in Eleme Local Government Area said that rather than blame former Governor, Peter Odili, he (Obasanjo) should be held responsible for Amaechi's woes in the 2007 election because according to him, he was fully in charge then. He continued that he would not apologise for the decisions he made, at that time surprisingly denying Governor Amaechi the gubernatorial ticket for PDP in which he had tagged as having k-leg, prior to the build up of the elections, but that at the end the supreme court upheld the elections and declared him winner of the Rivers State 2007 gubernatorial elections.   Meanwhile, the Governor thank President Obasanjo and described him as a good leader and that is why he is pleased to invite him t...
