Good afternoon! Here are 10 things you need to know today:
1. In the headline this morning is the massacre of 40
students of Federal Government College, Buni Yadi, Gujiba Local Government Area
of Yobe State by members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect.
The latest attack generated wide condemnations from
well-meaning Nigerians who called on President Goodluck Jonathan to tackle the
outlawed sect.
2. Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Mr. Adesina
Ajayi, passed away at the age of 61 after a protracted battle with cancer of
the urinary bladder.
Ajayi until his demise represented Odigbo Constituency 11 at
the Ondo State House of Assembly.
3. Justice Ishaq Bello-led Anambra State Governorship
Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Awka on Tuesday struck out the
application brought by a claimant to the governorship ticket of the All
Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr. Chike Obidigbo. The tribunal in its
verdict said Obidigbo is a stranger to the entire petition.
4. On a sad note, over five persons were crushed to death
while waiting for buses at the popular Oshodi Oke bridge in Lagos.
The incident happened exactly four months after a truck
belonging the Pastor Lazarus Mouka’s led Lord’s Chosen killed over eight
persons on the same spot.
5. Also in the news this morning, the people of Odi in
Bayelsa State have moved against the assets of the Federal Government in
Britain, as they have registered in England, the N37.616 billion judgment debt,
awarded to them as compensation for the 1999 military invasion of their
community.
6. Equally making a strong headline is the statement by the
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy Dr. Ngozi
Okonjo-Iweala demanding to know the whole truth about the alleged missing $20b
which the suspended Central Bank Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi said is missing
from the federation account.
Iweala in a communiqué said demanded for urgent action with
regard to an independent forensic audit of conflicting claims of unaccounted
funds made by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and suspended
Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamdio Sanusi.
7. Also, the Nigeria Police Force paraded 12 suspects in
connection with the torture of three women at Oba Morufu International Market,
Ejigbo, Lagos State.
The suspects, alleged to be members of the Oodua’s People’s
Congress, OPC, had reportedly tortured the three women last year for allegedly
stealing pepper at the said market.
8. President Goodluck Jonathan fell under the heavy axe of
over 43 Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, when they declared him incompetent
to end the Boko Haram menace currently tearing the nation apart.
9. Making a strong heading in the sport world this morning
is a statement by Super Eagles head coach Stephen Keshi that injured striker,
Bright Dike would not be part of the 2014 World Cup holding in Brazil.
Dike who plays for Toronto FC reportedly injured his
Achilles tendon in training and went under the knife last week.
10. On the international scene is the killing of 30
suspected militants in Pakistan in airstrikes after the government’s peace
talks with the Pakistani Taliban hit the rocks.
